Use Cases: Requirements in Context $39.57 This book describes how to gather and define software requirements using a process based on use cases. It shows systems analysts and designers how use cases can provide solutions to the most challenging requirements issues, resulting in effective, quality systems that meet the needs of users. Use Cases, Second Edition: Requirements in Context describes a three-step method for establishing requirements–an iterative process that produces increasingly refined requirements. Drawing on their extensive, real- world experience, the authors offer a wealth of advice on use-case driven lifecycles, planning for change, and keeping on track. In addition, they include numerous detailed examples to illustrate practical applications. This second edition incorporates the many advancements in use case methodology that have occurred over the past few years. Specifically, this new edition features major changes to the methodology’s iterations, and the section on management reflects the faster-paced, more chaordic software lifecycles prominent today. In addition, the authors have included a new chapter on use case traceability issues and have revised the appendixes to show more clearly how use cases evolve. The book opens with a brief introduction to use cases and the Unified Modeling Language (UML). It explains how use cases reduce the incidence of duplicate and inconsistent requirements, and how they facilitate the documentation process and communication among stakeholders. The book shows you how to: Describe the context of relationships and interactions between actors and applications using use case diagrams and scenarios Specify functional and nonfunctional requirements Create thecandidate use case list Break out detailed use cases and add detail to use case diagramsAdd triggers, preconditions, basic course of events, and exceptions to use cases Manage the iterative/incremental use case driven project lifecycleTrace back to use cases, nonfunctionals, and business rules Avoid classic mistakes and pitfalls The book also highlights numerous currently available tools, including use case name filters, the context matrix, user interface requirements, and the authors’ own hierarchy killer. 0321154983B07012003 |

Sample-Path Analysis of Queueing Systems $179 Sample-Path Analysis of Queueing Systems uses a deterministic (sample-path) approach to analyze stochastic systems, primarily queueing systems and more general input-output systems. Among other topics of interest it deals with establishing fundamental relations between asymptotic frequencies and averages, pathwise stability, and insensitivity. These results are utilized to establish useful performance measures. The intuitive deterministic approach of this book will give researchers, teachers, practitioners, and students better insights into many results in queueing theory. The simplicity and intuitive appeal of the arguments will make these results more accessible, with no sacrifice of mathematical rigor. Recent topics such as pathwise stability are also covered in this context. The book consistently takes the point of view of focusing on one sample path of a stochastic process. Hence, it is devoted to providing pure sample-path arguments. With this approach it is possible to separate the issue of the validity of a relationship from issues of existence of limits and/or construction of stationary framework. Generally, in many cases of interest in queueing theory, relations hold, assuming limits exist, and the proofs are elementary and intuitive. In other cases, proofs of the existence of limits will require the heavy machinery of stochastic processes. The authors feel that sample-path analysis can be best used to provide general results that are independent of stochastic assumptions, complemented by use of probabilistic arguments to carry out a more detailed analysis. This book focuses on the first part of the picture. It does however, provide numerous examples that invoke stochasticassumptions, which typically are presented at the ends of the chapters. |

Quality Teaching: A Sample of Cases $64.95 Discussion of teacher education too often degenerates into a false dichotomy between the claims of theory and practice. In Quality Teaching, Edgar Stones breaks through that sterile debate by focusing on teachers as inquirers who try to solve pedagogical problems and who draw on all the educational, psychological, theoretical, and practical resources at their disposal. By detailed analysis of numerous case studies of novice and experienced teachers grappling with real classroom problems, Stones shows that true quality teaching is only achieved by sensitivity to the interplay between the processes by which children acquire knowledge, the structure of knowledge within the subject being taught, and the whole context in which the teaching is being done. He makes available to teachers and student teachers a whole body of empirically based psychological knowledge on concept learning, problem solving, and the learning of physical skills and shows for the first time how this knowledge can inform and at the same time be refined by what happens in the classroom. Throughout, his aim is to support teachers as explorers in pedagogy and active problem solvers, guided but not limited by theoretical insights from the study of human learning. |

Sample Survey Theory $104 This book describes a novel approach to the theory of sampling from finite populations. The new unifying approach is based on the sampling autocorrelation coefficient. Step by step, the author derives a general set of sampling equations that describe the estimators, their variances as well as the corresponding variance estimators. These equations are applicable for a whole family of different sampling designs, varying from simple surveys to complex surveys based on multistage sampling without replacement and unequal probabilities. This volume will be useful for survey practitioners faced with complex surveys. The book also considers constrained estimation problems that may occur in practice when linear or nonlinear economic restrictions are imposed on the population parameters to be estimated and the observations stem from different surveys. For example, regression estimators and consistent estimation of contingency tables are special cases within this rather broad class of constrained estimators. This volume also offers a guide to little-known connections between design-based survey sampling and other areas of statistics and related disciplines. The common underlying principles in the distinct fields are explained by an extensive use of the geometry of the ancient Pythagorean theorem. Apart from its applied importance, the book may also serve as a textbook in advanced courses and as a reference for researchers in statistics and empirical economics. In order to make the text as self-contained as possible, the treatise includes one chapter with the main results from statistics, including regression analysis. Some familiarity with calculus and matrix algebra is a sufficient prerequisite.Paul Knottnerus received his PhD in economics in 1989 from the University of Amsterdam. In 1995 he joined Statistics Netherlands, Department of Methods and Informatics. Previously he spent several years with Dutch Telecom. He is author of the book Linear Models with Correlated Disturbances (1991). |
