Instead, use effective action words and appeals to the senses. When you’re looking for a teaching job, use your experience to evoke what it’s really like to be in a tough classroom. Include a description of being in a classroom and having to teach a room full of kids stealing glances at their blackberries, furtively passing notes, and clustering in the back of the room. Let the principal know you know what it’s like.
Open a blank page and draft a brief but very visceral description of the biggest problem your hiring manager experiences that you can solve. Come up with some evocative phrases that will draw in the reader: “a savage wind of unrest blew through our school”, “the celebration almost lifted us up off our feet!” This is your job, these are your accomplishments. Don’t be afraid to use words that sets you apart.
Make yourself the hero of a story.
Use an anecdote to showcase your qualifications. Instead of a straightforward retelling of your job history, pick a colorful time in your career and build a story around it. It should give concrete examples of how you were resourceful, tenacious, how you overcame problems, or achieved results. Give the reader a reason to applaud your creativity or courage and root for you. Edit it so it’s only the least bit indulgent.
Again, it’s likely to show up in the interview allowing you to make an indelible impression. It will set you apart on paper and add an extra benefit for the reader. They’ll have an interesting story to pass around in the cafeteria. You could become a celebrity before you walk in the door.
Create a string of small moves in your cover letter that set you apart.
It doesn’t take a lot. Just a few small things. Put them all together, and the recruiter gets a cover letter like nothing else they’ve seen, one that positions you powerfully for the job.

In a resignation letter’s heading, should I include my name/address?
I have been looking at various sample resignation letters and now I’m confused. In school we were always told that in a business letter, we should put our name/address on the right, and the company’s name/address on the left, above the body of the letter. Is a resignation letter the same thing as a business letter?
Also, where does the date belong?
And, where do I place the CC (HR manager and store director)? (I’m leaving a job at a grocery store; do I need to include the store director?)
And one more thing: do I need to use my manager’s last name, or is first name okay? I call her by first name all the time; but since this is a formal resignation letter, do I need to address her as Ms. “Smith” ?
This is the first time I have ever left a job and any advise is greatly appreciated!
