How to issue Gift Certificates for My Retail Store?
I own a small retail store and I would like to start allowing customers to purchase gift certificates. I plan on just printing them up on some nice paper with To, From, Date, Amount and numerically number them. My question is what do I do when the person who receives the gift certificate doesn’t want to spend the entire amount the certificate was issued for. Example: a customer comes in with a $50.00 gift certificate and only finds $25.00 worth of stuff he wants to buy. Giving cash back doesn’t make good business sense. Do most places require that the customers use the entire gift certificate all at once? Does it seem okay to require the whole thing be spent w/ one transaction? Using the credit card type gift cards is too expensive for the amount of business I do.
I have a business that gives the customer a store credit and if they don’t spent the entire amount the computer keeps a running total of what the customer has left to spend. They never get the money back. If your system is not that advanced you could keep track on a spread sheet on the computer. You must keep all of their information on file such as their name and phone number. You can give them a slip that has your logo on it or a business card of yours and right the total of the credit on it but they must have the card to redeem the credit because if you deduct it one day they may try to bring the card in on another day and say no I did not use my credit. Make a copy of the reciept after each purchase and keep it in a file so you can get it out if they say they have not used the money. Have them sign the copied reciept.
