How to Create a Website for Your Business

OK, you have a small business or you are planning to start one. You have “create a business website” on your To Do list. How do you go about this? What are the steps in planning? Then what is the best way of turning your plan into reality? Should you hire a firm to build your business website design?

Why do some websites succeed while the majority of others fail? It’s not complicated, your visitor came looking for something, so what was it? A top notch business site is focused on what the visitor wants to know and delivers a memorable marketing message around that need.

It takes planning to make a website that gets results for your business. By focusing on what your ideal customer wants and what you can deliver, you will craft a website around satisfying that need.

10 Steps to Create a Great Business Website

  1. What is your purpose? Start with defining your objectives. Do you want to sell products online? Is your website a place to send interested prospects as part of your sales process? Are you a local restaurant and want to make to make it easier for customers to see your menu, your hours of operation and a map to your place? What defines success on your new website? You will want to measure whatever you decide is important.
  2. Who are you trying to reach? Think about your ideal customer. This is your “target audience” Who are they? Are they upper income investors, soccer moms or will you be selling trendy clothes to college students. What “burning question” will they have when they arrive to your site? You want to supply the answer to that question on your home page.
  3. Look at your competition: Spend time looking at your competitors’ websites. Visitors arriving to your site certainly will. Look at the style and look of their websites. What products and services do they offer? What keywords are they building into their content? What is their call to action? Look thru at least 10 competitor sites and use their best ideas they have to offer and avoid the worst
  4. Your image and branding: This is the look and style you want for your website. This will be affected by the industry you are in, who your ideal customer is and what kinds of sites your key competitors have. Remember, if you position your company as providing high quality products and services, then your website needs to reflect that.
  5. Where to get web traffic? Before you design your site, decide where your visitor traffic will come from. You can optimize to be found in the organic search results, advertise using pay-per-click (PPC), advertise on other websites with affiliate advertising or simply refer people to your website with offline advertising. If you decide to go after natural search traffic, build this into your design.
  6. Research your keywords: You will want to do keyword research even if you decide not to optimize your website. Why? Because the keyword phrases are what people type in when they are doing searches. This tells you what your prospects are searching for. You will increase your conversion of prospects to customers if they see the answers to what they are searching for clearly written on your website.
  7. Pages to include: Your home page receives the most visitor traffic, but did you know that the second most visited page is usually the “About Us” page. This is because people want to learn who you really are. Design your navigation to follow your ideal sales conversion. Add pages such as testimonials, privacy policy and FAQ to build trust and answer sales objections.
  8. Write great content: People come to your website seeking answers and solutions. It is important to be technically accurate and to write in a compelling and engaging style. Web content needs to be written in a short attention getting style. Every page needs to direct your visitor to take some action, even if you are just directing them to the next page in your sales process.
  9. Build the site: You can build it your self, use a website template or hire a business website design firm. What you do depends on your objectives and where you want to get your traffic from. If organic search traffic is important, then stay away from Flash websites and online website builders. If you hire a firm, make sure they are experienced in building the type of site you need and check their references.
  10. Promote your new website: Once you have your website up and operating, promote your website both online and offline. Consider posting on a blog and getting listed in online directories. Include your website domain on all business cards, stationery, brochures, and advertisements. Even include your website in your email signature in every email you send.

Use the website statistics package that is included with your web hosting or add Google Analytics to your web pages. This way you can track and measure the metrics that define success from step 1 above.

The key to a successful business website is in the planning. By following a good planning process, you can get the results you need from your business website.

Restaurant business is categorized as one of the most risky businesses around. It’s been proved over and over again that the only guaranteed way to end up with one million dollars in a restaurant business it to invest two million into it.
