What’s On Your Head?

Hats go in and out of vogue, but head gear is definitely a hot trend for summer 2009. Add a little kick to your summer wardrobe by adding some stylish head wear. Whether you are looking for a fashionable status hat, something for a special occasion, or a just for fun piece to keep away the summer sun, there is a wide variety of trendy accessories from which to choose this season.

Head pieces are used for many different occasions and reasons. Military personnel use hats as a symbol of rank. Some religions require head coverings or head wraps, and such items must be worn inside a place of worship. Nothing protects the head, scalp and hair like these clever inventions. Formal occasions, weddings, and social situations may dictate the use of a hat.

The hottest fashion trend for 2009 is the pub cap. These sporty, bright pieces of head gear typically do not have brims, but may have a visor. The look can be urban, utilitarian, hip or business-like, depending on the hat and the way it is worn. Give yourself a fashion boost and pick one up today.

A close second to the pub cap in popularity for the summer is the fedora. Fedoras usually have a soft brim, with a shape that can be changed and molded by pinching and creasing. Fedoras are making a fashion comeback this season, and the best buy color choices are: cobalt blue, orange, yellow, purple, or green. A fedora is considered semi-formal and can be used for dress-up events.

Top hat are the most formal of all head pieces. With their tall, flat crown and broad brims, they are typically worn for weddings, and black tie social events.

Homburgs are next in line in terms of formality. In looks the homburg resembles the fedora, but the brim and crown cannot be reshaped. A homburg is acceptable attire with suits and for some black tie invitations.

Bowlers have fallen from favor in the United States, but are still worn and loved in the United Kingdom. With a snug fit and a low crown, bowlers are seen at equestrienne events or worn with a city suit.

For an eye-catching summer addition, try a formal boater, worn with a suit or blazer. Boaters are made of straw and traditionally have a ribbon around the crown. The ribbon may signify a school or club affiliation.

Panamas are brimmed hats constructed of straw, and worn for formal wear with lighter summer weight fabrics like linens and flax. In fashion, however, rules are meant to broken and today’s panamas are worn with any attire.

Other hat options to consider are all purpose summer hats with various brims, classic cloches, berets, and turbans. Whatever head gear you choose, keep these etiquette tips in mind: hats should always be removed for the National Anthem, funeral processions, outdoor weddings, in church (men), and inside buildings. They are proper in public areas, but should be removed whenever ladies are present. Tipping, also called doffing, a hat is considered polite.

if my groom wants to wear a suit is that silly if i am wearing a formal dress??

he has been married before and we have been told that is proper etiquette for second marriage to have business attire and not tux? This is my first, however, and I am wearing a beautiful ivory wedding gown…. Would it be okay to add a vest to his suit instead of a tux….?

I’ve never heard of such a thing. Have him wear a tux. You don’t want the male guests dressed better than he is.
