Choosing The Right Online business degree Program

You know you want to enter the fast-paced world of business, so you’ve decided to enroll in an online business degree program. It’s certainly a step in the right direction, but if you haven’t checked out the various online programs available lately, you may be surprised by the many choices now available. It’s certainly a good thing to have so many choices, but it can also be daunting.

The reason so many cyber-schools are now offering a variety of different degrees in their online business degree programs is because there is so much diversity not only in what companies are looking for, but in they type of students that are enrolling in the programs. Businesses are becoming more and more complex, and more specialized every year and colleges and universities are meeting the need by developing specialized programs that address the needs of particular business models and types of industries.

Online Business Degree Programs Are Becoming More Specialized

If you aren’t sure what industry or type of business you eventually want to settle into, a business administration degree may be the right approach. You can get a Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree and even a Master’s Degree in this area, which offers classes in everything from finance and marketing to leadership and management. On the other hand, if you know that you want to go into either a specific division or type of management (human resources, for instance), you can enter a more specialized online business degree program in order to obtain an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management.

Some of the most popular business degrees in today’s corporate marketplace include:

Accounting Degrees

These can range from Associate’s Degrees to Bachelor’s Degrees and beyond. You can also get a broad-spectrum degree, such as Private Sector Accounting, or become an Accounting Specialist by taking more advanced courses to add to your expertise.

Administrative Office Management

This is a great online business degree program for anyone who wants to become an office manager. Learning all of the ins and outs of spreadsheets, graphics, accounting basics and everything else needed to organize and communicate information clearly is the core of these programs.

Healthcare Reimbursement

This is one of the fastest growing and most specialized business programs you can major in, and the demand for individuals with this type of training will continue to be strong in the foreseeable future. As insurance plans become more complex, the coding systems and reimbursement paperwork becomes more complex as well. Insurance companies, hospitals, clinics and doctors’ offices are all looking for qualified experts in the healthcare reimbursement field.

Human Resources Management

With increasing competition for employees in every business sector, qualified human resources specialists are in demand to help companies recruit, train and retain the most qualified candidates. A degree in this specialized business area will also prepare you to handle workplace ethics situations, contract negotiations, grievances and dismissal policies.

Network Management

This is an online business degree program that builds on computer networking to cover various aspects of network systems management for larger companies.

Many colleges and universities now offer a dozen or more ways to get a degree, whether an Associate’s, Bachelor’s or Master’s, that will provide you with the skills and knowledge you need to get ahead in the private business or public service sector. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that “a business degree is just a business degree.” Instead, take a look at the wide variety of specializations now available to find the one that’s just the right fit for your goals. Since an online business degree program can be studied at your own pace while you are working, it’s one of the best and most efficient ways to invest in your career.

If you want to go into Management Consulting and you want to work for a big firm, I suggest researching the consulting firm and finding out what type of interview they perform (how they go about it, what they look for, etc.). One good source of information is Vault.com (there may be better ones but that’s the one I used to look at when I used to work for other people).

You’re right to improve your resume as much as you can. However, a good resume probably won’t get you hired. In fact, it may not even matter that much. Here’s why I say that…

I used to work for one of the “Big Four” consulting firms and interviewed many people. We had a very specific interviewing methodology. In the first phase of interviewing, we looked for specific things that we considered indicators of probable success with the firm.

In the second phase of interviewing, we use the “Critical Behaviors” method of interviewing. I asked the applicant to tell me stories about their experience in certain areas. For example, “Tell me about a time when you disagreed with your boss.” They would describe the scenario in great detail and I would probe for detail, looking to see if he or she exhibited certain behaviors that we valued. It really didn’t matter if the applicant disagreed with their boss at Goldman-Sachs or their boss at McDonalds. We were looking for behaviors; not flashy name-dropping. We would rather have someone who displays the right behaviors at McDonald’s than one who does not display the right behaviors at Goldman-Sachs.

One of the most critical abilities of a Management Consultant is to think critically and adapt quickly. (There are many others.) As an employer, I would be far more interested in a candidate whose resumes reflect valuable qualities than a list of impressive companies (not that it’s “either-or”).

After many years as a Management Consultant, I had worked for a bunch of clients on a bunch of client engagements. Every engagement could be different and my role on each project could be different. It’s not practical to pack all of that detail into a couple of pages of a resume. What I did instead was to organize my resume by “skills.” I made each skill a heading (such as “Program/Project Management” or “business development“) and then listed the “highlights” of my Project Management experience under that heading and the highlights of my Business Development experience under that heading. (And by the way, I did a little name-dropping by adding a laundry list of clients in a separate section. I just listed them; I didn’t go into detail about what I did for each client.)

In short, Management Consulting firms will look far more closely at your mind and behaviors than they will your resume.

Here are a few qualities I think you should have as a Management Consultant:

o Communication skills
o Organization skills
o The ability to think ahead and plan ahead.
o Critical thinking.
o Project Management skills.
o FLEXIBILITY (It’s unbelievable how often and unpredictably things change).
o Relationship skills (you need to be able to work well with everyone from CEOs and Customer Service Reps)
o THICK SKIN (As a consultant, you’re always on the “outside” so you may be the butt of many criticisms and an ever-present potential scapegoat for anything and everything that may go wrong; if you get your feelings hurt easily, this may not be the right profession for you)
o CYA skills (this is part of being organized; make sure you document everything. This is not only for CYAing but for keeping everyone on track. People tend to forget what they said and decided. If you get everything down on paper, that won’t be an issue.)
o Quick Learner (You’ll be in different environments quite often; the faster you can learn, the better.)
o Confidence (You will be called upon to do lots of things you don’t think you can do. You get used to doing things you’ve never done before. Don’t get scared. It works out.)

That’s all I can think of at the moment. If you have other questions, feel free to contact me.

Good luck!

The five key sectors contain these and many other forms and templates: risk-management (pre-screening, waiver, release, and incident report forms), employees and staff (job evaluation, compensation, and independent contractor forms), membership (membership application and agreement, feedback, and referral forms), administration and operations (expense reports, equipment maintenance logs, purchase order requests), and signage (locker room, aquatic and pool, children’s area). Produced in cooperation with the American Council on Exercise.
