But when you do find the home based business that suits you, it will allow you to have the freedom of being in charge of your time and the effort you want to put into your business.

The main thing you have to remember in starting a home based business is that the business would all depend on you so whether it succeeds or not is really in your hands. There are several steps in entering this particular business, and like any other business, you must consider the amount of capital you can invest in this endeavor, you must also consider the operations side of your business if you are going to produce actual products, and of course, the marketing aspect of your business should be looked into as well. Anyway, here are some considerations you have to take into account when you are searching for the home based business opportunities around. First of all, know all the options out there by surfing the internet, reading up on business newspapers and magazines, attending seminars that discusses this particular topic, and thinking about the next big thing. (Research has shown that the next big thing is webducation) By doing all this research will allow you to settle down with the company with the product you think will have explosive growth over the next few years to come. Settling down with a company will prevent you from losing focus with other mlm companies that emerge everyday with some interesting product. The problem with people is that when the going gets tough, they normally try to find an easy way out. When they meet smooth recruiters promising the sky, they normally jump ship! Top earners never quit! And they build their business with ONE solid company for years before they get their 6-7 figure MONTHLY INCOME!

In selecting from the many different business opportunities that are available, you must consider the resources you have and make the full use of it. Have you seen many people complaining and comparing other peoples success to be down to parent’s connection, or parent’s money? But what is wrong with that? Stop complaining and start to concentrate on your business! By complaining, will the guy just stop and think, “oh, i might just stop using my parent’s money and wait for you to catchup”?
That is why it is important to think of all the resources you have and make the full use of it. If you do not have the financial resources, you might have charisma that draws people to you, or you might have internet marketing skills etc. The idea is work on your own strengths. You should also consider forming a team to leverage on one another’s strength.

Look into the market and try to understand your potential customer’s needs and desires and you are actually in a better position to do this since you share in their preferences. But most of all, you have to know whether there is an actual market in this business and be sure that the particular market you are considering actually exist.

How do I get advertisers on board for my Magazine Project?

I am starting a small magazine and need advertisers to help fund it. I am targeting businesses here in my home town. How do I present this opportunity to them? Do I call, go in person, send a letter, email??? Do I have to make a “mock” magazine to show them what it will be like to get them more interested?
Any insight will prove valuable. If you have a link that discusses this topic, even better.

I’m an ex-newspaper publisher, but have been involved in specialty publications. (I’ve also written two business books, but now just freelance.)

The biggest mistake new publishers make is not having enough money for their start up. I have watched lots of new titles come out with the first issue and then crash because there’s no money for the second and third issues. Even if you are successful in getting advertisers on board, you have to extend them credit – they’re businesses, they will expect to have 30 days to pay their account. Can you survive that long?

For the actual magazine:

1) write a business plan (who is this targeted to, is their competition, why should anyone buy an ad in your title and why should a reader want yours? Are you filling a hole?)

2) develop a marketing plan. How can you get your title known?

The previous poster mentioned the Chamber of Commerce. That’s important. Introduce yourself to them, ask them for their input (not in writing stories, but for weaknesses in local coverage or things that are missed). Once you have a mock up of your mag and have an idea about readership and demographics, as well as rates, ask to speak (briefly) to a Chamber meeting.

3) Figure out your costs. This is part of the business plan, but make sure you know what it will cost you to print and distribute your title: printer, postage, staff, office, office supplies, computers, designers, distribution, marketing …

4) Timing: when you launch is very important. Businesses work with budgets. You’re not going to get them to jump on-board right away because they have committed themselves to radio, local newspapers, fliers, TV, etc.

5) When you know all the answers to the above, then do a targeted mailing to key advertisers. THEN follow up with an in-person sales call. It’s harder for people to say no to your face. But you want to use the mail first so that you aren’t totally cold-calling. However, you need to get into see the people within 48 hours of your mailing, so they can recall it and think about you.

It’s a lot of work to launch a new title. It is exhausting. You’ll be broke for a while and it will take over your social life. A lot of people will offer moral support, but no cash. It can be done, but cover as many of your bases BEFORE you print the first issue because you won’t have time once you launch. Good luck.
