Vista to XP downgrade on a Dell?
I just bought a Dell with Vista Home and I want to downgrade it to either XP Home or Professional – it doesn’t matter. I know it’s possible to do but I came across a search saying that if you downgrade to XP Professional, you can ONLY do it if Vista Business was installed on the pc, not Vista Home. Is this true?
In other words, I don’t want to use a different key when it’s possible for it to install without one.
My Dell is a Vostro 220.
And if worse comes to worse, can I use a key from another pc for this one?
Yes it is possible, but I don’t know for how much longer. Now that Windows 7 is out I am sure MSFT is going to stop allowing this at some point. FYI, it doesn’t make a difference to the OS that your system is a dell. I would just make sure before you do anything that you have a backup of all your data and that you have drivers for the Vostro and any additional hardware you own. These should be on the discs that came with the system.
