HIGHER ED HOLDINGS: REPORT CONFIRMS DEMAND FOR QUALITY ONLINE DEGREE PROGRAMS

DALLAS – An article in the April 3, 2009, edition of U.S. News and World Report told its readers something that Higher Ed Holdings and its university partners already knew: Online degree programs can expand a university’s reach and make education more cost effective.
The article by Kim Clark states that more than 4 million people enrolled in online courses in the fall 2008 semester. As distance-learning competition expands, public and private colleges and universities are offering more programs in response to inroads made by for-profit, Web-based universities.
Clark’s article mentions Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, which provides master’s degree programs in education delivered through Higher Ed Holdings’ online platform. The Dallas-based company provides the online platform – including high-quality production, discussion and interactive chat-room capabilities to deliver the university’s courses.
“The online platform makes it extremely accessible; a lot of teachers cannot take on-campus courses for a variety of reasons, but they are able to take them online,” said Dr. Ann Cavallo, a UTA College of Education professor and director of the master’s program for science curriculum.
Donna Lewis, a 14-year teaching veteran who teaches special education at the Secondary Reassignment Center in the Irving Independent School District near Dallas, is enrolled in Lamar’s online Education Administration program. She said she likely would not have been able
to pursue the degree without the online option.
“I wouldn’t be able to get out of my home that often,” she said. “It would be too much time away from my family.”
Lamar student Judy Weir, a first-grade teacher for 20 years who is now at Pebble Creek Elementary School in the College Station (Texas) ISD, said the cost was a major factor in her decision.
“Maybe I could afford (an on-campus program), but only after my own children finished college and their loans are paid off,” Weir said. “I seriously probably never would have gone back, primarily due to the cost.”
The U.S. News article quoted Harvard Business School professor Clayton Christensen as saying the best online courses are of the same quality as classroom classes. The courses provided through the Higher Ed Holdings platform are designed by the university professors, who also maintain complete control over the content.
As demand for online education continues to grow, and state universities find no quick and easy solutions to rising tuition rates, Higher Ed Holdings has prominently positioned its state university partners to provide unlimited and affordable access to their high quality degree programs.

Is it possible to transfer credits from Phoenix Online (MBA) Univ to Stanford Graduate School of Business?
I have heard many rip off stories and a few good stories about Phoenix Online University. Since it is so difficult to research and decide who is right and who is wrong let me rephrase what I’m looking for:
Would a college at the top of the pecking order (like say Stanford, harvard etc…) accept credit transfers from a course done in Phoenix Online University?
How about the MBA (Technology) course to be specific?
The reason I’m asking for transferring of credits is to answer an indirect question. How would an employer merit a degree earned from an online institution? Phoenix Univ, to be specific but, others like Walden Univ etc may also fall under this category
As long as Phoenix is accredited, it should be possible.
Employers are going to respect a degree from a school like Stanford alot more than they will a degree from an online university; that’s just the way it is. But the merit of the individual student is still a big factor.
