You will not find a grant for paying off existing debt. Period.
Have you sold off all your previous inventory, fixtures, office equipment, etc? Instead of having a garage sale, make up a flyer of items that could be used by other businesses in the area, print off about 50 copies, and give or send them to other area businesses. The other option is to list particular items on Ebay, and sell them off slowly. This will net you more than just having a “garage sale” in a few days, and may help with payments for a few months.
Other than that, you will have to get a job to pay off the loan if you want to retain your credit and not go bankrupt. Many times you can work out a payment structure with those you owe if they are smaller companies, if its a big bank, or credit card debt, you will have to continue with the regular payments.
Sorry to hear about your shop closing. This is very hard. My Dad had a similar situation in the early 1980’s, and it took him a couple years to pay everything off. Because he continued to pay, even a little bit each week, his previous vendors were more than happy to provide positive recommendations for him. Several sent him Thank You notes and commented on his personal character and integrity. It took him quite awhile to sell the building, but was finally able to, and that gave him a fresh start. Do not take the advice of any internet people who say they are “reputable” and can handle this for you. Those are scams, and you could end up losing your identity on top of this fiasco. Talk to the bankers, and those you owe, and see what you can arrange. I have even heard of people making trades for their time in order to pay off bank loans, like you would work for them for a period of time to erase some of the loan.
The only legitimate source of grant information is www.grants.gov. All others are not to be trusted. Feel free to search it for yourself, but you will not find anything for your situation. As a SBA/SBTDC small business consultant, we get questions about grants every day. There are very few, mainly for non-profit, educational, and alternative energy, and those are only matching funds.
