About the Author
When sports are involved, are American colleges just part of the entertainment industry?
They pay kids with scholarships to entertain fans to make money, most of which gets reinvested in the sports programs to make more money.
All the while, they push kids into either athletic majors or sociology or something that requires little coursework. Many of them, like the University of Oklahoma, they are not even in with the rest of the students in their basic general education classes. They have sections of math English, history, and so on of just athletes.
Is this the business model of a serious learning institution or an entertainment company?
It’s a mutually beneficial arrangement. The athletes, many of whom are not adequately prepared for college to begin with, receive an athletic scholarship, sports training, status and glory on campus, and exposure to pro team scouts. The university gets game revenues far in excess of what the athletes cost them, which then fund other athletic programs and athletes at the university. The big-time sports programs keep alumni connected to the school, which increases alumni donations to the university which are used to fund programs and buildings which benefit other students as well as the athletes. Many of the football and basketball players never make it to graduation (despite 4 years at the university), but their lives are probably enhanced by spending time around other motivated students and coaches and their job prospects may be increased by completing at least part of a college degree.
