i have to do a powerpoint presentation in my college course that im taking online and i just want to hear different thoughts to give me a jumpstart
major:
on one side its connected to the consumerist society through the links between advertising and the various sites of entertaiment, especially tv.
It is this advertising link that is the key factor in the power of entertainment. on society
Using Galtung and Ruge’s influential work on ‘news values’ (ref below) the tv shows with the highest rating attract the most money. Thus all tv programmes , especially the news, have to be ‘entertaining’ to exist in competition with the news on other commercial channels.
This means that the these key points about the entertaiment values of news are the basis of which news stories are shown:
-negativity –bad news is highest
-wealthy high status countiries and
-high status people (celebrities)..(poorer countries/people don’t rate)
-visuals: thus practical consequences that can be visually recorded eg news as car smashes rate more highly that an abstract discussion of factors that might well have created those car smashes/floods/disasters)
These four star stories (bad thing happening to celebrities in wealthy countries) are rare so the tv news settles for three star or two star stories. This means we get a very skewed image of the world with only the high status countries and people being portrayed in positive light. If you’re a low status , non celebrity with some important abstract point to to make, you will only make it to the news if you/ve been murdered or have murdered/defrauded/etc…so our ability to understand what its like to be a mother of a child in Zimbabwe and what good, important, but abstract ideas she has about improving her chances – are severely limited if the tv news is our only source of information about the wider world. Moreover as TV news is being filtered now through Youtube presentations on the Net, this ‘entertainment value of the five second ’shock shot’ is likely to have become even more exaggerated)
Thus we are at risk of beng rendered as ‘political idiots’ in terms of our ability to gauge the way the world works…increasingly likely to overestimate the ‘goodness’ of wealthy countries and ‘wealthy people’ and to see the rest of the world as a mass of almost less than human, powerless, speechless victims
