20th Annual Notre Dame Celebrity Golf Classic by Chris Amato
The 20th Annual Notre Dame Club of Toledo Celebrity Golf Classic was a spectacular success due to the hard work of Marty McManus and his committee. The Celebrity Classic was held at Stone Oak Country Club on June 26th.
Our special celebrity this year was Dwight Clay, ND '75. Dwight has the distinction of making the winning basket against UCLA in 1974 to break the Bruins 88 game win streak. Playing for UCLA that year was Bill Walton who had chance to win the game in the final seconds. This achievement by Dwight is unquestionably the penultimate athletic event in Notre Dame sports' history. Dwight narrated a six minute highlight tape of the final minutes of the game during dinner. Dwight came in from Pittsburgh for our event.

The list of celebrities included Frank Stams, Scott Grooms, John Dampeer, Ed Sullivan, Dewey Poskon, D'J Francisco, Hiawatha Francisco, Terri Buck Lewallen, Phil Krill and our own, Dave Butler. Bob Schmidt, who holds the distinction of playing quarterback at both ND and USC, made the trip from Maryland. The Celebrities are a great example of the true spirit of Notre Dame.
The John Stoepler Award was presented to club member, Tom Young, for his commitment to service in the Toledo Community. Tom spent most of this career at Owens-Illinois where he was the acting-CEO prior to his retirement. Tom has been a board member on many local organizations including the Bishop's Education Council, United Way, Police Athletic League and has been very active with the Excel Program at the University of Toledo and the Central City Ministry of Toledo.
There were three groups who tied for the championship - the winning teams were led by Tom Drake, ND '74, Tom Welly, ND '54 and Frank Sheehan. After a score card playoff, Frank Sheehan’s team was declared the grand champions.
This event has allowed our Club to provide partial financial aid scholarships to four students annually who attend Notre Dame. Our club also makes contributions to local charitable organizations and sponsors an ND student doing volunteer work in the area for the summer.
Celebrities committed for next year's Golf Classic include Tim Brown, Dave Casper, Matt Doherty and Ed Sullivan.
Pictures from the Golf Classic can be view on flickr.com. If you have any photos that you would like to include in the album please submit them to John at john@domerconnect.com.
Mud Hens Outing by Nick Malone
On June 14th, the Young Alumni of the Club sponsored a members outing to Fifth Third Field to catch a closely contested match between the Toledo Mud Hens and the Syracuse Sky Chiefs. After meeting for dinner and drinks at Packo's at the Park prior to the game, Alison & Drew Rogers with their 2 young children, Tom & Jenny Antonini with their 3 growing boys, J.P. & Tricia Hayward with their 2 youngest children, as well as Ryan King, Nick Malone, John Stierwalt and his lovely friend Carrie, Jim & Peggy Malone, and Judge Kopf headed over to the stadium to see a tough 4-2 Mud Hens loss. Despite the unfortunate outcome of the game, a good time was had by all, with plenty of good food, beverages, and cotton candy to go around. Please be sure to keep an eye out for an e-mail about next year's outing! |
