Technology in the Cab—the Long-haul Internet
Professional drivers drive for many reasons
—money of course is important but there are other reasons as well. Independence, the love of the open road, and the pure fun of driving a big rig are all reasons that drivers drive. It’s also an important job—trucking is vital to commerce, because it forms the backbone of our transportation system and is a critical element of our economy. Virtually everything that a consumer or business buys or uses has at some point been shipped by truck. Professional drivers get to enjoy doing something they love, while playing a major role in everyone’s lives.
—and a vital piece of equipment—in the cabs of big rigs everywhere. Affordable wireless access—today, available just about anywhere—makes the Internet an essential tool for the professional driver. Some enterprising drivers are actually running online businesses right from their cab, to make some extra income, and in some cases to switch careers entirely.—and a lot of money—by using the Internet to find return loads, connecting to shippers in their destination city right online. Fees, payment arrangements and transportation schedules can be worked out from the comfort of the cab. Paperwork, such as bills of lading, invoices and receipts can be scanned and e-mailed on the fly, instead of standing around someone’s office waiting for a copier and a fax machine. Drivers can share personal e-mails with family and friends to help ease the loneliness. And online maps with step-by-step driving directions make transportation to remote or unknown locations a breeze.’t worth anything if your job is killing you. The Internet has enabled many of these transportation professionals to find other work, in the form of online business opportunities that make it feasible to start a new business while they continue to work as a driver. Many drivers choose to start an Internet-based business part-time, while still hitting the open road. —driving only for fun, when and if they want to—and working the online business from the comfort of their own home. These people are not only making more money, they’re also adding 10 to 12 years back on to their life. Based on the health risks, it’s something every professional driver should consider.
But driving professionally also comes with a price. A recent study by the Canadian Trucking Association shows that long-haul drivers are giving up anywhere from 10 to 12 years of their life in pursuit of their professional passion. Continuous vibrations, noise, emotional stress, breathing bad air, a lack of sleep and poor diet all contribute to this loss.
So using a tool to eliminate even some of these problems makes perfect sense for the professional driver. Enter the over-the-road Internet. More and more drivers today are turning to the Internet to make their lives easier, while making more money. A laptop on a specially designed stand is now a standard fixture.
When it comes to their health and well-being, however, a lot of drivers are forced to draw the line. All of the efficiencies in the world aren’

I have a BA in International Business. I would like to work on the internet?
I have a BA in International Business. I am both a Canadian and a Mexican citizen. I reside in Mexico. I worked 5 years in the purchasing department of a 270 million a year appparel company. I then went to work with a world leading label company. Any ideas on were I can find jobs, partnerships, business opportunities to make money? I would like to work on the internet. I don´t necessarily have to work from home, but I would like to take advantage of my skills.
Is there any companies paying people to follow up on business leads of even close deals in other countries?
There are a lot of virtual companies on the web.
My web host is entirely staffed with virtual employees all over the world. It is very hard to get in but he takes very good care of the people who work for him. My wife and I got to go to Canada, stay in a 5 star hotel, eat and get trained for one of my duties.
The reason for saying this is to encourage you to keep looking . They exist. This company only hires from within. So you would have already have had to have developed your own web site, learned the theories of the company owner (he wrote the best selling book that is considered the Bible of how the web works) and put them into practice.
The lesson here, start looking at virtual companies, start researching how they work, learn their theories and practices and find one you like and you will have a better chance than anyone else.
This is how I did it. It did take a year and a half to get here. As a result, I get to teach both businesses and at local colleges which is what I wanted to do.
I am assuming your bi-lingual. This is an even bigger benefit to your future employer.
Best wishes.
PS It would never hurt to build a successful website or blog and have that on your resume.
