can i have auto business in my home property?
what if i dont want to set a location just for auto business to selling vechiles and etc, i would like to start with one car in my home property i am trying to get into auto business and selling on website only ebay,autotrader,cars.com etc is it possible to do that? i saw a requirement for getting dealer license i must get zone approval… isnt it possible to get approved right at my home property ? i just want to start at bottom business first then if success make enough profit i would find a place with office and lot for vechileS to park showing in public and selling cars on website also… i know its too many questions i am also confused, want to make sure before i ask office said” hello i would like to get dealer license on my home property” lol
Most areas are zoned for either commercial or residential use. In most jurisdictions you cannot run a business from a residential property. Some jurisdictions make exceptions for certain professionals such as attorneys or CPAs that don’t generate a lot of additional vehicle and foot traffic. None would allow you to run a dealership, however.
Most states limit the number of vehicles that a private citizen can sell or trade in a year without a dealer’s license; typically 3 or 4.
To get a dealer’s license, you’ll need a business license from your local city, town or county first. That won’t be granted if you are planning on running a dealership from your home unless you get a zoning variance. Don’t expect your neighbors to support you on that application! Don’t waste your time trying to scam that one, either. The agencies that grant licenses have access to databases that identify whether the address you are using is zoned for business or residential use.
In order to do what you are wanting to do you’re going to need an address in a commercial zone first. You won’t be able to legally run that from your home.
