Starting and Maintaining Your New Online Business
Starting out with a new online business venture can be quite the daunting concept, particularly for those who have very little experience in internet commerce. All too often, good online business concepts are tossed to the side simply because the entrepreneur has no idea where to start. On the other hand, there are many unsuccessful online businesses that went so far as getting a website set up and then failing from a lack of customers. For the internet business newbie, the most common mistake is thinking that all one has to do is provide a product and/or a service and create a website. There is considerably more to the process than that. Fortunately, the process is not all that complicated and easily mastered.
Once your website is set up and you are ready to go live, take a moment to look over your content. Research the particular industry that you are starting out in and find out what the most popular keywords are for that product or service. Perhaps you are not familiar with the term, “Keywords.” Keywords are, of course, words that are popularly used to describe your product or service. Make sure that these highly searched keywords are used multiple times on your website. This makes it easier for the search engines to pick up on your site, as well as making your site easier to find for those searching for your product or service.
Once your site goes live, initially you must submit your site address to the major search engines. This is a very simple process. Simply go to Google.Com and search the terms, “free search engine submissions.” There are a number of easily accessible websites set up that will submit your site to a number of popular search engines at one time. At this point, don’t expect overnight success. Some search engines can take up to two weeks to crawl your site. Be patient and take this time to work out any bugs that your site might have. Make sure your site is both effective and maneuverable while you wait.
This brings us to your website itself. There is an online theoretical concept referred to as the 20 second rule. This rule states that you have approximately 20 seconds to gain the average web-surfers attention before he will decide to stay on or leave your website. To catch your customers in this short time span, your home page must be visually appealing with catchy graphics while simultaneously being easy to get around through. If you have no experience at the above, do the research or hire a specialist to do the work for you. You might be out a few bucks at first, but it will pay off in the long run.
The final stage is an ongoing one. You can never promote your website too much and will need to do so on a regular basis. There are a number of ways to go about this. One is backlinks. Backlinks are links on other websites that lead back to yours. You can attain these by posting messages on message boards and comments on other peoples web pages. Another popular and extremely effective method is to trade links with other individuals. Tell them that you will put a link to their site on yours if they will do the same for you. If they have any internet savvy whatsoever, they will jump on the chance. When choosing what site to swap links with or comment on, check the sites Google Page Rank. A page rank is the level of popularity of a particular site. A link to your site from a high ranked page will be picked up quicker by search engine algorithms and increase your page rank exponentially.
When starting out a new online business venture, patience is your overall best tool to have. Don’t expect to become an internet business guru right out of the gate. Always take at least a couple hours per week and promote your site and products/services and an equal amount of times researching popular manners in which to make your web presence better know. Eventually, you might just find your business at the top of the list.
