I am currently on maternity leave but cannot afford to stay at home for as long as I would like so I thought I would start my own business so I can work at home but still be with my baby. You should look into being a virtual assistant. There are organizations that will help get you started.
But basically it comes down to marketing. You should not spend a lot of money on advertizing. Use the network you already have to solicit work, ask for referrals and let it spread by word of mouth.
