Review of Windward Reports AutoTag Max

Getting AutoTag Max installed was a lot easier than a lot of the other software I use. The instructions guide you step-by-step through installing the components, which includes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express Edition. Then you install the 40 MB package by following the free online documentation. Free documentation might seem like a big deal, but some companies charge you for it.

One of the biggest expenses in the report creation process correlates to the design tool’s ease-of-use. Because AutoTag is an add-in to Microsoft Office report creation was a much simpler process than with the other tools we evaluated. We were able to immediately start designing report templates after installation. We simply opened Word and began adding what we needed to the template.Because we already were familiar with the design interface, it took us much less time to master. Nearly all the features in Office were available to us, with the exception of some minor formatting tools.

One of the features that stood out was charting. Reporting programs often stumble with charting, but this is another area where Windward stood strong. The charts were easy to create, had a wide range of layout and theme options, and were accompanied by solid examples in the sample templates and written documentation. We also designed a few reports in Excel, which ran just as smooth. Of particular note was the ability to use Excel’s dynamic formulas, which expanded intuitively with our data.

Connecting to datasources was a simple process. We launched the connection window and chose the appropriate database from a list of the databases handled: SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, MySql, PostgreSQL, OleDB, ODBC, or any other ADO.NET provider installed. You can also use XML file and Excel spreadsheet data sources, and you can connect to them in any order. The system searched for matching databases and presented us with a list, and it saved the most recent connections in a drop-down menu. After testing our connection with a button click, we began designing our reports.

Up until now, everything we’ve talked about is in both AutoTag and AutoTag Max, but here are a couple features available only in AutoTag Max:

When running reports on different sets of data, we were pleased to find that we didn’t need to pore over our templates looking for tags containing variables. There’s a “Prepare Template” tool that did that for us automatically. It presented us with a list of undefined variables in the template, and we set default values and parameters for each variable. When we then ran our report, we were prompted in one easy step to enter our variables.

One of the coolest things is scheduling reports to run automatically, and the scheduling options are almost limitless: daily, monthly, weekly, yearly, with numerous options in each category. Plus, we could choose whether to email, save, or print the reports. The software also includes a Report Mananger that lets you tell at a glance what reports we had scheduled, how often they would run, and when they would run next.

Support is probably one of the best reasons to work with Windward. The detailed documentation covers everything from installation to program use to sys admin maintenance, and there are also short “getting started” guides that helped us get up and running quickly. The website offers written tutorials, video demonstrations, and paid support. All our questions were responded to within a couple of hours and the support team bent over backwards to get our templates working properly.

Overall AutoTag Max was the best reporting tool we evaluated and will now be implemented across our entire business platform. The slick report design and ease-of-use were big selling points along with their diligent support staff. I would recommended going with Windward to any business professional in the market for reporting software and solutions.

I work for an small insurance agency and I was given the task of creating reports. I am trying to research specific reports relating to insurance agencies as far as what they should look like, what data needs to be pulled from the system and included on each of them and what issues I might need to be aware of while creating each report. The reports I am researching this week are Lost Buisness Report; Expirations Report, Production Credit Report and Book of Business Report.
If anybody has ANY ideas of where i can locate this type of information, I would appreciate it. Even if I had to buy a book with some samples, that would work too.
Please help!
I have searched AND SEARCHED the internet for any of these or similar style insurance reports with absolutely no luck at all. I just need some ideas to get me started.
