Thinking of Business as a College Major? Think Business Specialization Instead

Business is business, as they say, but when it comes to a business education, not all degree programs have the same thing to offer. At one time, business management or business administration were the only two undergraduate routes to a career in business. This is no longer the case, and various areas of specialty are proving to be a better option for today’s students.

From project management to organizational leadership, the possibilities for focusing one’s academic tract to a finite area of business are almost endless. Traditionally, this hasn’t always been the best strategy. The more specialized you are, the harder it can be to find gainful employment upon graduation. With the modern business climate, however, companies are searching for personnel with specialized training in a particular area and far less willing to train employees at their own expense.

For those preparing for a career in business, it’s worthwhile to examine the possibilities. The various positions related to specialized areas of business involve different skill sets and aptitudes. Applied management is a far cry from organizational management, which is in turn distinct from contract management, acquisition management, project management and any of the many other managerial distinctions. Not only are the job descriptions different, but the environments in which associated duties are carried out, pay structures and scales and several other factors as well.

As the business climate has changed to embrace specialization, so have educational institutions. Students can find out about the pro’s and con’s of any business specialization they are contemplating through contact with advisors and admissions officers. A small investment in time speaking to someone knowledgeable on the opportunities presented by various business related academic options can pay big dividends, as the careers those options lead to can be rewarding for one individual and less than ideal for another.

Online institutions are restructuring their business degree offerings to include more options faster than most campus based universities. Because online universities are not limited by scheduling conflicts in relation to physical space, they are better able to incorporate new degree programs that reflect the modern business climate. Campus based institutions are not far behind, however, and many state schools across the nation are proactively approaching the dispersion of traditional business administration programs into more specialized tracts of study.

What should be the concentration of my MBA?

I work for a company that is sponsoring my MBA at Hofstra university. I want to get my MBA, but am usure of what my concetration should be. I have an accounting undergrad, have attempted the CPA and auditing but really disliked it.

I was thinking of majoring in three areas and have read the course descriptions of each, but am not sure whats best for my future career in business. I plan on talking to the advisor in the next few weeks, but am looking for opinions of the general public. The three area’s I am considering are as follows:

International Business
Finance
Management

What are your thoughts?

I have similar concerns, too. I do not enjoy accounting but the corporate world is highly demanding CPAs. Anyway, you have to ask yourself where you want to work upon obtaining the MBA. Those three majors are difficult, but it will lead you towards a narrower road. Research the jobs you want to take on after graduation, and it can give you a better idea of the field you should study. Good luck!
