I’m far from a graphic designer and know that this logo is very basic however I am trying to give my husbands business a new ‘look’ and am starting with a logo.
He would like to use it on business cards, letterhead, and as part of a sign on his car.
We are trying to highlight that he specialises in painting period homes by incorporating the lacework. The clip art isn’t the greatest I know but its the best that I could find. And we would like an old style font to match if anyone knows where I could download one for free.
What do you think? Any ideas how I can improve it?

I agree you need to have a professional or at minimum a graphic design student at a university help you out. Depends on how much you would like to invest (not spend).
Typefaces would be Goudy, Palatino or Bodoni. The one you have is too curvy and feminine, as are the doily clip arts.
I think it needs an architectural element to indicate your husbands specialization in old homes. Maybe a graphical porch swing or just a close up of some architectural woodwork that is stylized. This would be a fun logo to design. You should have no problem finding a hungry designer to take this on.
