Roommate hasn’t paid in 3 months, changed lock & suing me?
I am in Los angeles county & helping my friend manage 2 houses by getting roommates for his houses. In return, my friend let me stay in one room for free. But he put me in charge of taking care of the house & getting roomates. Each roomates has his/her own rooms & are nice. But this one roommate is bad & hasn’t paid his monthly for 3 months. I asked him to leave if he’s not gonna pay but he told me that he’s friend is a lawyer & told him that he can stay for free since I have no license to practice “business” or run “boarding house” in the house. He has changed the locks & now is suing me. I have no money but I feel responsible. What should I do?
Aside from the real estate issue in your question also be aware that in the eyes of the IRS you are being paid the value of the rent in exchange for service.
