I want to go to law school. Do I have to be a lawyer?
I’m an undergrad at UCLA with a great GPA. So getting in isnt the problem. I just dont know what I want to do as a career. I want to go to law school, but I dont know if i wanna be a lawyer. Does law school open ‘open options’ in terms of career paths? Or is it law only? I’m thinking I want to go into corporate business/law. Also, is law school/being a lawyer really convoluted and difficult? Or is it just that every profession is difficult…
You certainly don’t have to be a lawyer. Worked with a heap of law graduates in a child support agency who weren’t ‘lawyers’. Plenty of job openings if you don’t want to practice law. Its sort of like being an actuary – you are virtually guaranteed of getting some sort of job (eg the FBI is crying out for JD’s). The only issue is that it comes at a price – law school is hard. A lot of graduates, while able to actually get a job, end up saying – did I put myself though this to get that job? The pay and promotion opportunities is not likely to be what you associate with a law graduate eg I earned more as a programmer than the lawyers I worked with.
