How can Democrats be faulted for not having a united stand on Bush’s Iraq War when it is such a complex mess?

There seems to be no clear answer beyond getting our troops out of harms way in what is clearly now a civil war. Our troops do seem to be exacerbating a toxic situation so Murtha’s plan of removing them to the horizon seems wise. Conversely, extricating ourselves prior to finishing what we promised seems wrong. And Powell’s doctrine of you broke it, you fix it seems right too. Aknowledging that we were utterly wrong to invade a sovereign country on false claims of WMD and mushroom clouds seems like the right thing to do. But how do we make amends? We did create and arm Saddam Hussein in the first place didn’t we? We created the mess in Iran by replacing a democratically elected leader with the Shah. Has Bush read history? Can’t we ever learn to mind our own business?

Make amends–I don’t think we can. We’ve trashed a prosperous country and killed thousands of its people, simultaneously causing an influx of militant extremists, and reducing it to civil war. I don’t think “sorry” is going to cut it.

Having said that, I think an apology, and a buildup of ground forces is necessary to make any positive change happen. Pulling out of Iraq will be desertion in the eyes of the world, if we can’t stop the violence against its citizens first. But, if the Bush administration hasn’t resolved it one way or another, no Democratic presidential candidate is going to create a winning campaign platform based upon “To all the Iraqis and the other people of the world we’ve angered and disappointed, we screwed up and we abjectly apologize. Now we’re going to put enough people on the ground in Iraq to actually and decisively clean up our mess. We’re sorry in advance for all the innocent bystanders we’re about to kill.”

The only other option available to a candidate is, “We’re going to leave now,” then stand by helplessly and watch the slaughter of any and all who don’t accept the regime of whichever hard-line group gains the upper hand.

No matter what, a Democrat president is screwed on the Iraq problem. There is no good solution and they’re going to inherit all the fallout, while the Republicans chant, “See, if we were still in office, this wouldn’t be happening! Told you so! Told you so!”

Everyone who wants to run for office is desperately rubbing their crystal ball, trying to figure out the least damaging course of action to promote, while still appealing to enough voters to win the White House. I certainly can’t fault them for not knowing the answer, or for trying to find one. My guess is, we’ll see a united front a few month before the ‘08 election.
