need glossary of railroad terms.?
Just started off in the railroad business as a dispatcher and im hearing words like: Tamping, bad insulated joint, pull apart, kicker, regulator, gps’in, etc… Is there a website or book that i can look up that has railroad definitions?? Basically just the terminology that’s used out in the field like i mentioned above.
Those are all maintenance of way track terms.You could probably get most of them from wikipedia.But the best thing to do would be to sit down with a MOW foreman and let him explain them to you.That way when they tell you something you’ll have a clue what they are doing and how it will affect what you are doing as far as moving trains.For example if they tell you they are tamping(leveling the track with a machine that lifts the rail and repacks the ballast) you’ll know to expect a slow order to be issued when they are done.The dispatcher that’s training you should be able to help you with a lot of this too.
