How would you define the sentences below?
There’s an article in my English textbook which has some sentences that i can’t undrestand, even though i have checked my dictionary several times. I’d appreciate it if you could help me define them.
here are those sentences
1. “The manager is obviously going out of his way.”
2. “The manager and the assistant will now be locked in a bitter power struggle.”
3. “The manager should bring the workers into the day-to-day processes of the business.”
4. “most of us take rejection of our ideas personally.”
that’s all thanks
What do you mean by ‘define the sentences’. Here are my interpretations.
1. The manager is doing things he doesn’t have to do and that he is doing so is evident to everyone. The manager is very clearly doing those things to either (A) accommodate someone or (B) make life difficult for someone.
‘Going out of his way’ is an idiomatic expression to mean that people do things they don’t really have to do. It may be used positively or negatively, depending on context.
2. The manager and the assistant are involved in a situation where each wants to take control. They are locked in to this struggle because each want sto win. It is a bitter struggle because, possibly, they do not like each other.
‘To be locked in’ is also an idiom, meaning that there is no choice except to be in this situation.
3. The manager should keep the staff informed about the the events that maintain the business. It doesn’t have to be done every day, but the staff should be informed regularly.
‘Day-to-day’ is an expression that means ordinary and should not be taken literally as from one day to another.
4. When any one of presents an idea and someone says ‘No’ to it, we take it not just as a rejection of our idea, but also as a rejection of us.
