The only real reason I do business of any kind with American Express is for the travel protection (nothing I pay separate for, just that inherent in AE cards in general when you buy a ticket, hire a car, etc) on one or two trips per year, and for runs to Costco.
The credit score looks at the difference between your available credit and what you’re using. Shut down accounts, and your total available credit shrinks, making your balances loom larger, which typically hurts your score.
The score also tracks the length of your credit history. Shutting older accounts can also make your credit history look younger than it actually is, which can hurt your score.
If your account has no limit, then it would not really affect your credit score as far as debt to available credit ratio, so canceling it really won’t make much of a change in your score. If it does have a high limit, then it would change your ratio of debt to available credit which accounts for 30% of your score.
