The expansion of toys for Tots program
Coordinators and volunteers with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program Okinawa will be overtime during the holiday season to extend the scope of the charity 60 years in the region.
Marine Reserve, which is activated specifically to support Toys for Tots began their campaign to collect toys in 2007 at ceremonies in the post on the Camp Foster and Kadena Stock Air Base on November 3.
This year, the program has added Thailand and Guam to their area of responsibility, said Sgt. Suzette Smith, a coordinator with Toys for Tots in Okinawa. Volunteers and Marine Reserve collect toys for needy children in the prefecture Okinawa and the Philippines in the past.
Smith hopes Marines personally deliver the donations to Thailand and Guam as in the willingness Operation, which provides toys and clothing for the children of the Philippines during the Christmas season.
"The main objective Toys for Tots is to deliver, thanks to a brand new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to disadvantaged youth that motivate them to become responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders, "according to the activity of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation Web.
Last year the agency has collected about 10,500 toys, "said Sgt. Henson Shamala, a coordinator for the Toys for Tots Okinawa. She hopes that the reader can collect collection at least 11,000, mostly because they want to take care of children in two more countries this year.
"I want to break the year's goals last and to ensure that each child has four toys like last year, "said Henson.
Program coordinators want also give the Ho Ho Express, a closing event campaign to collect donations from many in the last moments of the toy collection. The Ho Ho Express is scheduled for December 15, last day of the unit. A bus will visit each collection box of the island and the program staff will collect all the remaining toys. The event has doubled the number of toys collected in 2005 with the help of American Forces Network radio stations, which was released in constant evolution and the location of bus stops nearby.
The program needs toys for all ages children. Toys for pre-adolescents and adolescents are often difficult to obtain.
"People should remember that children are 13 and generally the age group that we need more, "Smith said.
Running the program coordinators Okinawa has many events for this year and drive a lot of need for volunteer help. Volunteers can help with tasks such as classification of toys or promotion donations to make a public appearance with her blue dress.
Major Bill Hendricks and a group of marine reserve colleagues in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5000 toys to needy children during the first Toys Tots program 60 years ago. Officials plan to continue the mission as long as there are children in the need around the world.
